What causes frost heave in the soil?

Frost heave is the movement of stones pushed to the surface during the winter months in the colder northern regions of the world. In the winter, due to differences in pressure, the subsurface soil water moves up from below, then freezes near the surface.
As it freezes, it forms ice crystals. The amount of ice crystals (and frost heave) often depends on the type of soil, especially the soil pore spaces. F’or example, clays with smaller pore spaces exert a greater frost heave than coarser-grained soils that have more pore space for the ice crystals to expand.
